Please enjoy a relatively comprehensive list of all the media I consumed in March of 2025.
Movies:
‘Bridget Jones’ Franchise: I’ve finally finished the Bridget Jones series! I could have sworn I watched the original movie for the first time just a few months ago, but according to my Letterboxd I watched it around this time LAST YEAR. In my opinion the strongest movies are the first and the fourth. The middle two are charming, but lack strong narrative structure and storytelling technique. I still would recommend, especially for a movie marathon with the girls. It’s also super cool to see how the cast has aged and grown over the course of the 30 years of the franchise. We even get a little bit of character development for Mr. Daniel Cleaver.
‘Anora’: This year’s best picture, everyone! And yes people, it was that good. Honestly, it was so refreshing to see a movie with such a contained plot and low budget get to win cinema’s most prestigious award. It is a testament to the fact that a good story and strong character work will always beat flash and gimmick. I appreciate this win and I appreciated this movie. It’s a must watch in my book.
‘Mickey 17’: A dual role plot line!? A mono-racial black woman as the female lead? STEVEN YEUN!? BONG JOON-HO!!?!? From the first preview of this movie I KNEW I had to see it and my goodness it did not disappoint. In the same breath, the film was also not quite what I expected. The movie is a (somewhat on the nose) critique of the American capitalist system that still manages to feel like something different and new. It has its own voice. I’m so glad I got to support a film that isn’t a remake of a remake of a remake that gave its black female lead agency and the wherewithal to be passionate, to take up as much space as she liked, and to be loved just as she was. EVERYONE SAY THANKKKK YOUUUUU BONG JOON-HO!!!!
‘Picture This’: So my friends and I do this thing where we pick a movie we know will be, ummm… unconventional, to watch and laugh at during an at-home movie night. ‘Picture This’ was this month’s selection. I can’t in good faith recommend this movie but what I CAN recommend is the silly movie x wine night combo with the girlies.
‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’: I was mourning Bridget Jones, okay? I’ve always loved these kinds of quiet movies, with smaller plot lines that feel like real life and trade the grandiose for the granular. This movie is exactly that. And of course, Hugh Grant is charming as always as our forward, but awkward leading man.
Television:
‘Barry’ Seasons 3 & 4: I finally got to revisit one of my all time favorite TV shows. Bill Hader is quite literally a genius. While I do prefer Season 1 & 2’s slightly more grounded feel, what I do appreciate about ‘Barry’ is its dedication to maintaining novelty and a fresh feel at every step of the series’ production. This starts out with the show’s blended genre concept and extends to its high-level cinematography, unique to shows of similar thematic caliber.
‘Invincible’ Seasons 3 & 4: ‘Invincible’ remains of one my favorite TV shows of all time. Growing up during the MCU’s golden years, I loved the show’s original subversion of the superhero genre, rooting itself in the more sinister materiality of the real world considerations and consequences of super-powered beings. The show also still manages to remain genuinely funny and continues to engage the audience through cinematic and narrative experimentation as well as meta-textual call-outs and nods to its core fan-base.
Digital Media:
A funny, but informative breakdown of this year’s Oscar’s ceremony.
I feel like people don’t understand how much of a strategic art form comedy, and specifically stand-up, can be. This video partially explains how and why.
Watch one of the masters of Late Night interview one of the masters of Copywriting and Advertising.
Steven Yeun is literally top 5 actors working right now. Here he breaks down how he rose to this point in his career.
J.K. Simmons has my favorite filmography in all of Hollywood. In this video, he walks you through why that is.
‘Invincible’ fans always complain about how the show’s limited budget affects its production quality. This video offers a pretty grounded solution.
I hope you enjoy my watchlist. Check out a title or two🫡.
